Confidence, Inner Strength and a Little Pig!

The quick and cheap route to confidence nearly always has shaky foundations

Confidence is a bit like the house built out of bricks in the story of “The Three Little Pigs”. It is solid, fends against threats and is generous to those in need. Like most enduring stories, there is something we could all learn, or at least be reminded of from time to time, in the story of “The Three Little Pigs!”

The pig who built his house out of straw didn’t get very far when the wolf came to call and nor did his mate who built his house out of sticks! The pig who followed his own instinct and chose to build his house out of bricks even when being mocked by those who felt like they had a far quicker and cheaper solution, fared the best in the end! In fact, he did so well, that he was able to save his two mates and keep them safe when they had nowhere else to run! That’s a good mate to have around!

Would we be able to recall the story of “The Three Little Pigs” so easily if there had been four or five or even two little pigs?

Confidence lies in your strengths not your weaknesses!

Speaking techniques like the rule of three, for example. I don’t know whether we would be able to recall the story of “The Three Little Pigs” so easily if there had been four or five or even two little pigs!

Or that stories trigger an emotional response in the listener and anticipation of the outcome. A speaker wanting to inform his audience that bricks were a more reliable material for building houses could have simply said; “bricks are stronger than sticks and straw”! Succinct and to the point, but who would remember that or even care?
